SDSS J140429.37+172359.4: large-amplitude modulation

Kyoto team (Ohshima-san et al.) observed this dwarf nova
(=1RXS J140429.5+172352), reported to be in outburst (cvnet message),
on May 2 and detected 0.4-mag variation. Although the waveform of the
first hump resembled that of a superhump, the exact periodicity was not
confirmed due to the subsequent passage of clouds. If this was indeed
a superhump, the profile suggest a period of 1 hr or even shorter
(and would be amazing!). Alternatively, the object might resemble
IQ Eri, which showed large-amplitude irregular variations.
This finding appears to be consistent with the report by Etienne Morelle
in cvnet, and further analyzed by Jeremy Shears.
Further observations are strongly urged to better understand the
nature of the variation.
