Dear colleagues,

I herewith announce my independent detection of superhumps in the lightcurve of HP Cet, obtained last night (2019, Sep 25/26) at CBA Extremadura Observatory, using a 0.40-m f/5.1 telescope and SX-46 CCD camera, under clear skies. Our observations were triggered by private email exchange with Patrick Schmeer.

The detrended light curve, covering a time span of 3.4 hours, clearly shows the presence of superhumps with an amplitude of 0.15 mag, hence establishing this target as a new SU UMa-type dwarf nova. At this stage, we can not (yet) distinguish signatures in the lightcurve that might point to a WZ Sge-type nature of the system, although this is likely to be expected.

A period analysis using the ANOVA method (Peranso), yields a superhump period of 0.0658 +/- 0.0008d. The object was at mag 14.1 (CV) on Sep 26th.

I will send my observations to AAVSO, CBA and VSNET for further analysis.

Follow-up observations are recommended.

Best regards

Tonny
