     It looks as though (per the AAVSO lightcurve archive) that except
for the extraordinary maximum of 1779, Mira has not been brighter
than mag 1.8 or 1.9.  The AAVSO archive goes back only to 1858, so is
missing quite a lot of older observations.
     I have the Mira observations by Wargentin covering the years
1751 to 1782, which includes the 1779 maximum (mag 1.2!) keyed-in at:
