Hi Bill,

I was able to confirm your bright object. The coordinates you derived are precise to the resolution given.

>From a CCD-V image I derive the following (2000) coordinates vs Tycho stars:
18 10 18.21 -18 46 52.4

This position is quite close but not coinciding with a relative brightish star from the USNO-B1.0 catalogue:
(r=0.1070 arcmin) 18 10 18.05 -18 46 46.4 0712-0533201 1971.5 5 14.16 10.65 13.32 11.24 10.56
Note that Tycho and USNO-B1.0 agree astrometrically within the given resolution.

The light of the apparent nova is somewhat blended with that of the star, but the 6.6 arcsec off-set is clearly seen on the image.

Another nearby star is at
(r=0.140 arcmin) 18 10 18.70 -18 46 47.7 1966.4 4 16.70 13.61 16.12 14.18
It's not seen on the image but ought to be well to the NE of the new object

The following magnitudes apply for the new object for UT 20070515.063 with 0.1 precision

9.7 B
8.9 V
8.3 R

Hola Everyone -

There is a possible nova at (2000) 18h 10.3m -18d 47'; its approximate
magnitude is 8.8. It appears on two photos taken at approximately May
14.163 UT
with Kodak TP film, an orange filter and an 85mm lens. Nothing brighter
than magnitude 11.5 was seen at this position on Mar 9. Nothing reasonably
bright
is seen at this position on the Real Sky Digitized Southern Sky Survey.

Confirmation, mags and spectra needed !

All the best, Bill Liller
