VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary

Very rare fading episode ----- TT Ari

*** Last week news ***

(new targets)
  TT Ari                  (RA = 02h06m53s.09, Dec = +15d17'43".0)

    E. Muyllaert noticed a very rare fading of TT Ari on Sep 7
  (vsnet-campaign 1603, 1604, vsnet-campaign-nl 151, 152).  
  The last major fading of TT Ari started in 1981.  Low states
  typically appears with a time-scale of 5000 d.  The object was
  initially suggested as a nova-like variable, then a dwarf nova.  
  It is now considered as a VY Scl-type cataclysmic
  variable. (vsnet-campaign-nl  153, 154, vsnet-campaign 1605, 1606).
  According to the ASAS-3 data base, the fading has already started in
  August (vsnet-campaign-nl 155, 156, 157, 158, 159, 160,
  vsnet-campaign 1607, 1608, 1609, 1610).  The object started
  rebrightening around Sep 12-14 (vsnet-campaign-nl 164,
  vsnet-campaign 1612).  
    CCD observations by Maehara on Sep. 12 did no clearly reveal
  superhump-like feature in TT Ari, suggesting that either positive or
  negative superhumps have almost disappeared.  If confirmed, this is
  compatible with the shrinkage of the accretion disk in accordance
  with the reduced mass-transfer rate (vsnet-campaign-nl 161, 
  vsnet-campaign 1611). 
    

  Lanning 386              (RA = 21h08m34s.03, Dec = +39d05'35".3)

    According to cvnet, the candidate CV Lanning 386 has brightened
  (Steve Brady's report).  According to PASP 207, 114 (2002), the
  spectrum shows a blue continuum and HeI absorption lines as well as
  late K-M features and broad Balmer emission lines 
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4530).  


  AY Psc                   (RA = 01h36m55s.44, Dec = +07d16'29".7)

    According to the ASAS-3 data, the eclipsing UGZ star AY Psc seems
  to be in a stage with dwarf nova-type outbursts (outbursts reaching
  mag around 14.3).  The object was frequently observed in standstill
  in past years.  It would be nice to regularly monitor this dwarf
  nova to catch the transition to a standstill 
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4532).

 
  LS Peg                   (RA = 21h51m57s.94, Dec = +14d06'53".3)

    The ASAS-3 data apparently caught a recovery phase (until JD
  2452830) of this cataclysmic variable.  The minimum at least reached
  V=14.1.  The object is currently at around V=12.0.  T. Kato
  commented that the slow recovery suggests a VY Scl-type phenomenon 
  rather than a dwarf nova-type (e.g. Z Cam-type) variation
  (vsnet-campaign-nl 162, 163).  


  V426 Oph                 (RA = 18h07m51s.71, Dec = +05d51'48".5)

    T. Kato reported that the ASAS-3 data in 2005 did not record any
  significant outburst of V426 Oph.  This object may have been
  exceptionally calm during the past two years 
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4533). 


  V1290 Aql                (RA = 19h46m31s.88, Dec = +10d47'03".2)

    T. Kato reported that the ASAS-3 data of V1290 Aql looks like a
  Mira star with a period of ~400 d.  Although this star has been
  classified as a symbiotic variable, this supposed classification was
  based on the initial classification (novalike variable) combined
  with a late-type star (vsnet-campaign-symbio 110).


  DH Aql                   (RA = 19h26m12s.05, Dec = -10d15'21".4)

    According to cvnet, DH Aql may be undergoing a superoutburst, as
  reported by E. Muyllaert (12.5mag on Sep 17) 
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4534).


(old targets)
  V368 Peg                 (RA = 22h58m43s.5, Dec = +11d09'13")

    P. Schmeer reported a bright outburst of V368 Peg (12.6mag) on Sep
  6 (vsnet-campaign 1600).  The outburst was soon confirmed by L. Brat
  (vsnet-campaign 1601), who took a time-series showing no clear
  superhumps (vsnet-campaign 1602).  CCD observations by Maehara on
  Sep. 12 clearly showed superhumps with an amplitude of 0.25 mag.
  This observation confirmed the development of superhumps as
  predicted (vsnet-campaign-dn 4531).


  Var Vul 05               (RA = 19h59m51s.29, Dec = +22d42'32".3)
  (= OT_J195951.3+224232)

     The fading from the superoutburst was reported on Sep 6
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4525).  The object experienced a rebrightening to
  17.5C on Sep 10 as observed by H.G. Lindberg (vsnet-campaign-dn
  4526, 4528).  It again faded to 18.59CV on Sep 11 as observed by
  B. Gary (vsnet-campaign-dn 4527).  T. Kato commented that the
  duration of the rebrightening was so short that another
  rebrightenings may occur, as observed in WZ Sge stars
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4529). 


  V5116 Sgr                (RA = 18h17m50s.77, Dec = -30d26'31".2)

    The nova is now fading at Rc=11th mag
  (vsnet-campaign-nova 1749, 1750).


  V1663 Aql                (RA = 19h05m12s.50, Dec = +05d14'12".0)

    The object is fading (vsnet-campaign-nova 1749).


  V1188 Sco                (RA = 17h44m21s.59, Dec = -34d16'35".7)
 
    The object is now at 12th mag (vsnet-campaign-nova 1749, 1750).


  S5 0716+71               (RA = 07h21m53s.45, Dec = +71d20'36".4)

    According to BAA VSS alert, the blazar S5-0716+71 is brightening
  (12.6mag ; Sep 5) (vsnet-campaign-blazar 337).


  FS And                   (RA = 02h25m55s.07, Dec = +37d34'05".8) 

    FS And may have been in a possible superoutburst since late August
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 4524).
