Hi Stan,

Yes, I remember all those "special programs" back in the 1970s and 80s,
providing alert notification to professional researchers for particular
groups of stars. Made us amateurs feel "loved". Don't have that these days
and seems the pros only look at stars north of the equator.....

Perhaps this is a service the new VSS could promote whereby lists of stars
could be distributed through the VSS-members list (and others) requesting a
concentrated effort to monitor for outbursts/activity and which is then
reported through the usual alert groups and/or direct to the
researcher/group. A request for special attention usually tends to motivate
observers and some brief feed back make it even more satisfying. And Rod
does suffer a cloudy night occasionally!

  Hi Peter,

A couple of old friends in these two stars.

I had a look at ASAS3 for EK but the data there are not very helpful with
nothing which resembles an outburst. A sound reason for visual measures. I
seem to remember that it was a confusing field, with another star each side
of EK which made it hard to observe with PEP.

The GCVS gives a superhump period of 0.06492 which is attributed to Vogt
and Semeniuk in 1980 but I thought that these had been observed well before
this - probably before the Bateson article which was probably published
about 1978 (the C76 was meant to refer to the year but they were always very
late). We got a similar period at Auckland during one outburst, so there's
not much doubt that they are supermaxima.

Warner was observing a lot of these stars in the 1970s and I thought he
had picked up this one along with Z Cha rather earlier than 1980. But it was
all a long time ago and the memory is vague.

  Regards,
  Stan

BV Cen and EK TrA outbursts continue :

    CENBV 20090718.445 126 WPX
    TRAEK 20090718.449 109 WPX

The current outburst of EK TrA appears to be bright and long, the star
now remaining near maximum for at least 4 days. Both Narrow and Broad
maxima were identified by Frank Bateson (Publ 4, 1976 VSS RASNZ) where the
variable remains brighter than mag 13 for some 3 days and 10 days,
respectively but it is not clear from the visual data alone whether the
broad maxima are true super maxima. The current outburst would seem a good
target for southern CCDs.

    Regards
