As identification of V 601 Sco is still contentious, I have decided to look up the original finder
chart in Harvard Annals 109, 9 (1943). Yes, there was a finderchart before the one published by
Vogt and Bateson in 1982, but the scale is small, the field is crowded and it very difficult to
examine or interpret. This is where recent problems of identification have originated. I have
scanned the relevant part of the chart in HA109,9 and enlarged it, and while the quality of the
image isn't brilliant, it is sufficiently clear as to which star is marked as the variable. [I have
a copy of the actual paper publication, which should ensure optimum resolution.]
The variable was originally named HV 10840, later V601 Sco. Putting aside the name V 601 for
the moment, I find the following:
*HV 10840 = GSC 7372-1242 = UCAC2 16226806, r1 =13.10, B-V =0.65 (from 2MASS),
V = 13.409 (err 0.126) ASAS-3.
Posn: (2000) 17 04 07.85 -36 43 50.0
*Rod Stubbings red star = UCAC2 16226785, r1 = 14.33, B-V =1.54 (2MASS). V =13.717
Posn. (2000) 17 04 04.80 -36 43 30.8
In addition, I have marked five reference stars near HV 10840, A to E, on the finder charts which
will be sent separately to selected observers.
(2000) r UCAC2
A. 17 03 52.66 -36 45 56.4 11.6 16226698
B. 17 03 58.90 -36 45 45.7 12.51 16226743
C. 17 04 10.21 -36 42 51.2 12.37 16226818
D. 17 04 21.71 -36 44 09.0 11.84 16226884
E. 17 04 22.88 -36 45 59.5 12.32 16226898
Because attachments are always scrubbed from emails sent to chat lists, I am sending the scanned
charts
separately. Anyone not receiving the charts, please contact me and they will be sent privately.

Mati Morel
