No, Gary and Eddy, there is no need to speculate for several
millennia.

After solar conjunction of EG Cnc, I have been following this
CV since mid-September 2009 without noticing any brightening,
and Hazel McGee had EG Cnc at fainter than mag 15.4 on Oct.
4 and 5, so the current outburst was very probably not
preceeded by a superoutburst. What we are seeing now is not
the rapid fading after a supermaximum, because the outburst
was noticed merely 7 days after Hazel's last observation;
this time interval is too short for a superoutburst.
The Oct. 12 outburst was either a normal outburst or the
precursor of a superoutburst.

If I remember correctly, Taichi Kato conjectured a few
years ago that WZ Sge-stars undergo only superoutbursts,
but not normal outbursts.

I think, however, that WZ Sge-stars can undergo normal
outbursts. Even if these normal outbursts are twice or
three times as frequent as the supermaxima, they can
be easily missed considering the fact that they last
only two or three days and may occur only every few
years. Furthermore, for stars near the ecliptic like
EG Cnc, GW Lib, and RZ Leo, there is a gap in the
coverage of several weeks or even a few months around
solar conjunction.

Please note that a normal outburst of the UGWZ
candidate KX Aql was observed on 2007 May 26
(mag 14.1, Jeremy Shears).

Regards,
Patrick

Yes indeed Eddy. That would certainly be something! More
probable that the maximum was missed, and Ian caught the
decline, or an echo?
We could speculate until Belgium win the World Cup :^)

Cheers,
Gary
