RE: Staying on the original GCN computer for the near term
DT: 26 Jan 2010
GCN will continue to stay running on the old 'capella' computer
for the near term. I switched over to the new computer (capella2)
yesterday afternoon, but soon discovered a problem with outgoing email.
The new GCN computer (capella2) was able to make all the socket connections
to the socket-based sites just fine, but there was a problem with
the email-based sites. Email addresses outside of the "nasa.gov" domain
were being blocked (GCN emails to 'inside' NASA worked fine). Somewhere
in the NASA system, email from 'capella2' is being blocked to
the outside world.
I had put in a waiver to the NASA network security people to allow
'capella2' email to the outside (exacly as with 'capella' for all these years),
and initial testing on 'capella2' showed the waiver to be working.
But now during the attempt to switch from 'capella' to 'capella2',
the waiver is no longer working (or something else is blocking email).
The old 'capella' GCN will continue for at least another 10-12 days
because I will be on government travel from today until 06 Feb 2010.
(Even if the waiver/blockage gets fixed, I do not want to make the
switch to the new system remotely.)
And of course, the Circulars portion is staying with the old system
(gcncirc at capella.gsfc.nasa.gov). The original and current plan
does not call for the Circulars to switch over for another month.
I apologize for the confusion and inconvenience about this switching
to the new GCN system. A lot of testing has been done, but there will
always be some last little bit that can only be tested 'live'. This
last little bit has proven to be a problem.
I/GCN continues to be open for changes to your current configurations.
Sincerely,
Scott Barthelmy

General Adminastrivia Comments/Suggestions:
1) When requesting changes to your configuration,
it helps if you refer to your site_name.
2) If your site has more than one recipient (ie a list),
please review the list to see if anybody should be deleted;
(the volume of bounce-back-to-gcn emails gets large after a while).
3) If a new contact_person has taken over for the project, please inform me.
4) If your site is no longer active, please inform me.
