RE: SuperKamiokande Supernova Notice type is available
DT: 13 Apr 2021

INTRODUCTION:
The GCN system has been modified to incorporate the distribution
of the Super-Kamiokande SuperNova (SK_SN) neutrino source detections.
These neutrinos outbursts are due to supernovea in our galaxy.

OCCURANCE RATE:
The SK_SN "real" notices are rare and occur about 0.03 times per year.
(The "test" notices occur on the 1st day of each month.)

LOCATION ERROR:
The typical location uncertainties are 1-4 deg (radius, stat, 68-95% containment).

TIME DELAY:
The post-event processing (both pipeline and human involved) lasts less than 60 minutes,
the notice information is sent to GCN for formating, filtering and distribution within 10 sec.

NOTICE TYPES:
The SK_SN has both the "real" and the "test" content within the SK_SN Type.
Because of the low occurance rate of the "real" form, the two forms were combined
into a single sign-up so that the "test" notices can be used as a periodic testing
of the "real" stream. (They both have the same Notice Type_Number of 175.)
(If desired, the client can request that "test" stream be disabled.)
For the full email format, the distinction between the two sub-streams is shown in
the 3rd field in the 3rd line in the full-format email (see example below).
The field is filled with a "REAL" or a "TEST". The other distribution formats
have similar distinctions.

FILTERING:
Unlike many of the other notice types, there is no filtering applied
the SK_SN Notice type other than Type-filtering and SK_SN_no_test.
Given the low rate of these events, it did not seem useful to apply
any further filtering.

DISTRIBUTION FORMATS:
All the usual distribution methods and formats are available
(binary socket, voevent xml socket, full-format email, several
short-forms for cells/pagers, and VOEvent text).

ARCHIVE STORAGE OF THE NOTICES:
The GCN/SK_SN Notices are archived within the GCN website
in the Table of SK_SN transients:
http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/sk_sn_events.html
Both the "real" and "test" sub-types have accumulation tables.
The inclusion of the "tests" allow for checking that
the system is active for this type (at least at the monthly level).

MISC:
The socket packets contents for this type can be found at:
http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/sock_pkt_def_doc.html

ACTION ITEM:
If, after reviewing the information below, you want to receive the
"real" or both of these SK_SN position notices, please send me a request
to have them enabled. You can do this by forwarding this email to
scott at milkyway.gsfc.nasa.gov.

Sincerely,
Scott
