RE: SNEWS Notice type is available
DT: 17 Dec 2015
INTRODUCTION:
The GCN system has been modified to incorporate the distribution
of the SNEWS notices (SuperNova Early Warning System).
The SNEWS notice reports significant detections of bursts of neutrinos
from single detectors and neutrino coincidences from 2-or-more detectors
in the SNEWS network.
OCCURRENCE RATE:
There will be about 0.03 or fewer SNEWS Individual-detection Notices per year,
and about 0.03 or fewer SNEWS Coincident-detection Notices per year.
TIME DELAY:
The operations at each of the 7 SNEWS detectors and the SNEWS central computer
is automated resulting in a time delay minuets to hours (from when the neutrinos
pass through the respective detectors to when the Notice is available to the public).
LOCATION ERROR:
The location uncertainties, if location information is available, are in the
~5-10 deg range (radius, 68% containment).
TEST NOTICES:
There is a test version which gets issued by the SNEWS Team every 7 days
(12:00 US_Eastern timezone every Tuesday).
ACTION ITEM:
If, after reviewing the information below, you want to receive
these SNEWS notices, please send me a request to have them enabled.
You can do this by forwarding this email (which has your sitename identifier)
to sbarthel at milkyway.gsfc.nasa.gov .
Or you can go to http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/config_builder.html
and select "#2 Modify an existing config".
You can also take this opportunity to make other changes to your configuration (appended below).
ARCHIVE STORAGE:
The GCN/SNEWS Notices are archived within the GCN website
in the table of SNEWS Notices:
http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/snews_trans.html
This single archive page contains both types.
MORE INFORMATION:
Can be found at: http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/snews.html
NOTICE EXAMPLE:
Here are examples of a full-format email SNEWS REAL & TEST / COINCIDENT & INDIVIDUAL Notices:
(Note: Even the one labeled "REAL" is constructed from bogus but typical data;
and the EXPT names have been replaced with generic names. The real names are:
Super-K, LVD, IceCube, KamLAND, Borexino, Daya_Bay, and HALO.)
