GCN and LVC Notices, 16 Dec 2018
(Private phase GCN customers of O2 can ignore this email.)
The LVC has started their Engineering Run #13 as of 14 Dec 2018
(and will end on 18 Dec 2018 at 14:00 UTC).
During ER13, LVC will generate LVC Notices to be distributed by GCN
to the public -- no prior MOU is needed.
For ER13 these Notices will be generated after human inspection
has shown the trigger/event to be valid.
There are 3 Notice types:
LVC_PRELIMINARY
LVC_INITIAL_POS_MAP
LVC_UPDATE_POS_MAP
Each notice type comes in two substreams:
Superevents
Mock Superevents
In O2 the two substreams called the "M"-series
and the "G"-series ("M" for Mock data, and "G" for real GW triggers/events).
In the ER13 and onwards, LVC has changed the letter designations
from "M" to "MS" (Mock Superevents) and "G" to "S" (Superevents).
You can select which of the 3 Types you would like to receive
and you can select if you want to receive Superevents, MockSuperevents, or both.
The Superevents vs MockSuperevents applies to all 3 types (ie you can NOT select, say,
Super Preliminary noticea and Super + SuperMock Initial notices.
The "MS substream notices come in pairs every hour (ie 48 per day;
email recpients may not want that kind of load.
Unfortunately, the GCN Config Changer webpage (Item #2 on the
https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/config_builder.html webpage is not currently set up
to deal with handling of the previously private-phase LVC notice types.
This is likely to be fixed Monday or Tuesday). In the interim,
you can reply to this email saying which of the 3 types (Prelim/Initial/Updated) and
which of the two substreams ("MS" and "S") you want to receive.
This request for configuration changes is directed primarily at the GCN customers
that were not previously receiving the LVC notices during the private-phase of O2.
Please be sure to include your sitename. (You can see your current configuration
by Item #3 on https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/config_builder.html .)
Sincerely,
Scott
