A 0.7-mag rise can be naturally detected by visual observations,
but I know multiple instances when such a rise (or fade) was not detected
by visual observers and detected with CCDs (also in GK Per and in R CrB
stars etc.).
A two mag rise would have been too significant to dismiss, though.

As a both CCD and visual observer (who detected the 1989 July outburst
of GK Per), I know how difficult to detect a small early rise in this
object. With CCDs I found no such difficulties.
