TITLE: GCN CIRCULAR NUMBER: 45438 SUBJECT: IceCube-260825A - IceCube observation of a high-energy neutrino candidate track-like event DATE: 26/08/25 12:35:54 GMT FROM: Cristobal Zilleruelo Cañas at DESY <cristobal.zilleruelo.canas(a)desy.de> The IceCube Collaboration (http://icecube.wisc.edu/) reports: On 26-08-25 at 10:53:33.63 UT IceCube detected a track-like event with a moderate probability of being of astrophysical origin. The event was selected by the ICECUBE_Astrotrack_BRONZE alert stream. Documentation regarding the alert streams and their astrophysical purity can be found here: https://gcn.nasa.gov/missions/icecube. This alert has an estimated false alarm rate of 0.5733 events per year due to atmospheric backgrounds. The IceCube detector was in a normal operating state at the time of detection. After the initial automated alert (https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/notices_amon_g_b/143033_44905242.amon) more sophisticated reconstruction algorithms have been applied offline, with the direction refined to: Date: 26-08-25 Time: 10:53:33.63 UT RA: 91.95 (+0.75/-0.74 deg 90% PSF containment) J2000 Dec: 45.73 (+0.52/-0.51 deg 90% PSF containment) J2000 As announced in GCN Circular 43419 (https://gcn.nasa.gov/circulars/43419) IceCube alert notices for high-energy track alerts are now also streamed via Kafka. IceCube Gold/Bronze track alerts are available on the Kafka topic 'gcn.notices.icecube.gold_bronze_track_alerts'. The probability distribution of the true neutrino direction, allowing the extraction of precise 90% containment regions around the best-fit direction, is now available for revised reconstruction of high-energy track alerts. The corresponding sky map is distributed as a FITS file and follows the explicit naming convention IceCube-YYMMDDX, where YYMMDD indicates the date of the event and X is a letter distinguishing multiple alerts on the same day. The download link is provided through the GCN schema distributed via Kafka. Detailed documentation describing the alert distribution, schemas, and probability maps is available at: https://gcn.nasa.gov/missions/icecube. No known gamma-ray sources listed in the Fermi LAT 16-year Source List (FL16Y) are located within the 90% uncertainty region of this event. B. Cenko (NASA/GSFC) Following the SVOM (GCN 45422) detection, we observed the transient field in J and H-filters with PRIME starting ~5.5 hours and ~30 hours after SVOM detection. Within the localization region reported by SVOM (GCN 45422) and the regions of interest reported by Einstein Probe (GCN 45436), we find no significant varying sources during the 24 hour period between follow-up observations. Hawaii), on behalf of the Pan-STARRS collaboration, report: We observed the candidate optical afterglow (Globus et al., GCN 45429; Li et al., GCN 45430) of the short GRB 260822A (Schanne et al., GCN 45422) using the ESO VLT UT4 (Yepun) equipped with the MUSE integral field unit spectrograph. Observations began on 2026 August 23 at 09:31:23 UT (0.69 days after the SVOM/ECLAIRs trigger), and consisted of four observations of about 12 min exposure time each. The optical transient lies close to a system of two galaxies, visible in both our data and in archival images. This could be plausibly the host system of the transient. We measure for them the following redshifts: RA = 00:09:45.94, Dec = +01:23:29.8: z = 0.290 from Halpha, [N II], [O III], Hbeta; RA = 00:09:45.91, Dec = +01:23:24.8: z = 0.296 from Halpha, [N II], [O III], Hbeta. At the position of the candidate optical afterglow (Globus et al., GCN 45429), a faint source is detected. Following preliminary extraction and flux calibration, the transient spectrum shows a continuum with a number of broad undulations, typical of supernovae. Template matching via SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, doi:10.1086/520494), leaving the redshift free, provides a match with a type-Ia SN post peak at redshift z = 0.291 +- 0.010. Good matches to post-peak type-Ia SNe are also obtained using SNID-SAGE (Stoppa et al. 2026, doi:10.1093/mnras/stag1066). Given the timing of our observation, the SN exploded well before the SVOM/ECLAIRs trigger. Examining recent data obtained during ordinary Pan-STARRS survey coverage (see Fulton et al. 2025, doi:10.1093/mnras/staf1165), we report the following archival detections of the transient: | MJD | Filter | Magnitude (AB) | | -------- | ------ | ------------------ | | 61020.23 | w | >22.8 (3-sigma UL) | | 61247.54 | i | 21.4 +/- 0.2 | | 61263.54 | w | 22.5 +/- 0.4 | These archival detections predate the GRB trigger (MJD 61274.7). Both the photometric and the spectroscopic data thus support the interpretation that this source is a pre-existing transient, unrelated to GRB 260822A. We acknowledge expert support from the observing staff at Paranal, in particular Zahed Wahhaj, Thomas Szeifert and Marcelo Lopez. The Pan-STARRS system comprises of two 1.8m telescope units located at the summit of Haleakala on the Hawaiian island of Maui, employing an SDSS-like filter system denoted as grizy, and a broad w-filter, which is a composite of the gri-filters (Chambers et al., 2016, ArXiv e-prints, 1612.05560) Images were processed with the Pan-STARRS pipeline. After astrometric and photometric calibration, reference images were subtracted from the target images (Magnier et al., 2020a, ApJS, 251, 3; Magnier et al., 2020b, ApJS, 251, 6; Waters et al., 2020, ApJS, 251, 4). Discoveries from this program are a byproduct of the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) NEO survey observations. Operation of the Pan-STARRS1 and Pan-STARRS2 telescopes is primarily supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant No. NNX12AR65G and Grant No. NNX14AM74G issued through the SSO Near-Earth Object Observations Program. Goto (RIKEN, CEA) report on behalf of the SVOM and Einstein Probe teams: We performed two additional observations at the location of the SVOM/ECLAIRs GRB 260818A (Yin et al., GCN 45391) with the Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission. The observations started on 2026-08-18 at 18:10:40 UT (0.76 days after the trigger) and on 2026-08-20 at 18:05:05 UTC (2.75 days after the trigger), both with a total exposure time of ~6000 s. The source EPF_J232025.8-320549, detected by EP/FXT about 1.67 hr after the SVOM trigger, reported in GCN 45400, fades by a factor 2 in the second observation, from a flux of (13.1 +/- 2.6) x 10^-14 erg/s/cm^-2 down to a flux of (6.7 +/- 1.9) x 10^-14 erg/s/cm^-2 (0.3-10 keV; 1-sigma uncertainty). At this source position of RA, Dec: 350.1064 -32.0978 (with an error radius of 10 arcsec ), 5.9 arcmin from ECLAIRs position, no X-ray source is detected in the third observation. The fading behaviour of this X-ray source confirms it as the afterglow of GRB 260818A. Sun (NAO, CAS) on behalf of the Einstein Probe (EP) team: EP-FXT observed the field of EP260822a (Feng et al., GCN 45428) for 2825 seconds starting at 2026-08-23T05:39:06, around 13.5 hours after the detection by EP-WXT. No significant X-ray source is detected within the 2.6 arcmin radius of the EP-WXT position (Feng et al., GCN 45428) . The derived 0.5-10 keV flux upper limit is 7.55e-14 erg/cm^2/s, assuming a powerlaw intrinsic emission with a photon index of 2 and fixed galactic absorption. O'Neill on behalf of GOTO collaboration: Upon further examination, the GOTO optical detection is approximately 6" offset from the optical counterpart reported by Globus et al., GCN 45429 and Li et al. GCN 45430. Using MPChecker (https://minorplanetcenter.net/cgi-bin/checkmp.cgi) we find that the optical detection is consistent with a known MP object 2016 CP289 which is estimated to have a brightness of 20.8 mag, consistent with the GOTO detection. Pursiainen, on behalf of GOTO collaboration: We report on optical observations with the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO; Steeghs et al. 2022, Dyer et al. 2024) in response to the SVOM/ECLAIRS alert for GRB 260822A (Schanne et al.; GCN #45422). Following the detection of an optical counterpart candidate of GRB 260822A (Globus et al., GCN #45429; Li et al., GCN #45430), we checked the position of the candidate in the targeted GOTO data (O'Neill et al. GCN #45423) and identify the counterpart at a 4-sigma level with magnitude L = 21.00 ± 0.25 AB mag at 2026-08-22 18:28:33 (+1.63h). We note an earlier non-detection with 3-sigma limiting magnitude L > 21.26 AB mag at 2026-08-22 17:21:22 (+0.51h). SVOM/VT performed observations with automatic slew for GRB 260822A, which was triggered by SVOM/ECLAIRs (sb26082201, Schanne et al., GCN 45422). The observation started at 2026-08-22T17:37:09 UTC, about 47 minutes post trigger in the VT_B (400-650 nm) and VT_R (650-1000 nm) channels simultaneously. The optical candidate reported by SVOM/COLIBRÍ (FM-GFT) (Globus et al., GCN 45429) was detected in both channels. Watson (UNAM) and Damien Turpin (CEA/Irfu) report: We imaged the field of the SVOM GRB 260822A (Schanne et al., GCN Circ. 45422) using the DDRAGO two-channel wide-field imager on the SVOM/COLIBRÍ (FM-GFT) telescope. We observed from 2026-08-23 04:56 to 08:40 UTC (from 12.1 to 15.8 hours after the trigger) and obtained 82 minutes of simultaneous exposure in the r and z filters. The data were reduced and coadded and analysed with the COLIBRÍ and ASU pipelines. The photometry was calibrated using nearby stars from the PanSTARRS DR2 catalog, is in the AB system, and is not corrected for Galactic extinction. In the stacked image, we tentatively detected a faint, uncatalogued source in both bands, consistent with the SVOM/ECLAIRs error circle at: RA (J2000) = 00:09:45.57 = 2.43988 deg Dec (J2000) = +01:23:23.2 = 1.38978 deg, with an estimated astrometric uncertainty of 0.5 arcsec. The preliminary magnitude derived for that source was: r = 22.88 ± 09 z = 22.08 ± 0.14 We encourage additional observations to confirm the nature of the source.
